Thinking activity - Edger Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was 1809 and he was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic. He was best known by his tales of mystery and the macabre. If we read his life then we come to know that his life was very difficult because they faced financial problems. He struggled a lot in his life.  He studied at the University of Virginia for one semester but he had to leave due to financial scarcity.

Our task is to read two following Gujarati short stories

1. Pankor Doshi by Jhaverchand Meghani
2. Mansangh by Dr Jayant Khatri

Among the two short stories, Pankor is a very interesting story. In Mansangh we can find supernatural element like Ghost and witch as we find in Poe's short stories. Same way in the Pankor Doshi. But in reality, there is no witch or Ghost.

Pankor Doshi :

This is a very interesting story written by Jhaverchand Meghani. The narration of the story is very good. The story starts in a very good way. When we listen to this story we can imagine the condition of the Village. The condition of the village was very bad. We can find the following symbols in the story.

# Darkness and light
# widow - Pankor Doshi
# life and death

Our narrator lives in this village but maybe he is doing Job in Bombay. When we come back, he finds a difference. His family was a very good family and his son wanted to leave the village because in his home there were many insects. In the story, there is one interesting character, the character of Pankor Doshi. We can not get any idea that she is bad or good. Everybody calling her witch or not a good human being. People give her many names and also believes that if she speaks then something bad will happen with us. So the story talks about the reality of society or the situation. You may face problems in your life but we have to fight against it. Like Pankor Doshi's character. Everybody in the village believes that as a female character she has to sacrifice or her duty is to follow the ritual. When he (narrator) Hear about her, he thinks or imagines that yes, she is a witch and she is following us. But after knowing the story of her life that why everyone hates her or think that she is a witch. He thing that she is not a witch, but she has the power to face the society or situation. The language of the story is an apt one. Background music is also good. We can feel pity for the village and for Pankor Doshi.

Read the first Gujarati story and listen to the audio recitation of the second story. Observe how the two wordsmiths work wonders through words!

When we read or listen to the stories, some kind of images comes in our mind. Both stories are good and we can find some interesting points. But  Pankor is an interesting story. When I started, I found some good points like the reality of the village and of course the thinking of the people. In both the story we can find that the story starts at night or darkness.

2. List out various adjectives that contribute the most in creating the "pre-established design" or effect that the author intended to create.

In both the story writer uses following adjectives.

અંધારી રાત, ધુમાડીયુ કાળુ ફાનસ, નાનકડા જીવ

3. Which are the phrases you find frightening? How are they placed in the text?

There are many phrases I found which are frightening. When you read specially when I listened the story of Pankor doshi at that time I felt this kind of thing.
